A l’eau quoi ?

Fast Facts About Juvenile Arthritis

What Is Juvenile Arthritis?
Fast Facts: An Easy-to-Read Series of Publications for the Public

Children can get arthritis just like adults. Arthritis is caused by inflammation of the joints. It causes pain, swelling, stiffness, and loss of motion.
Juvenile arthritis is the term used to describe arthritis in children. The most common type that children get is juvenile idiopathic arthritis (idiopathic means “from unknown causes”). There are other forms of arthritis affecting children, including juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Who Gets Juvenile Arthritis?

Juvenile arthritis affects children of all ages and ethnic backgrounds. About 294,000 American children under age 18 have arthritis or other rheumatic conditions.

What Causes Juvenile Arthritis?

Juvenile arthritis is usually an autoimmune disorder. As a rule, the immune system helps fight off harmful bacteria and viruses. But in an autoimmune disorder, the immune system attacks some of the body’s healthy cells and tissues. Scientists don’t know why this happens or what causes the disorder. Some think it’s a two-step process in children: something in a child’s genes (passed from parents to children) makes the child more likely to get arthritis, and something like a virus then sets off the arthritis.

What Are the Symptoms and Signs of Juvenile Arthritis?

The most common symptoms of juvenile arthritis are joint swelling, pain, and stiffness that doesn’t go away. Usually it affects the knees, hands, and feet, and it’s worse in the morning or after a nap. Other signs include:
  • Limping in the morning because of a stiff knee
  • Excessive clumsiness
  • High fever and skin rash
  • Swelling in lymph nodes in the neck and other parts of the body.
Most children with arthritis have times when the symptoms get better or go away (remission) and other times when they get worse (flare).
Arthritis in children can cause eye inflammation and growth problems. It also can cause bones and joints to grow unevenly.

How Do Doctors Find Out if Your Child Has Juvenile Arthritis?

There is no easy way a doctor can tell if your child has juvenile arthritis. Doctors usually suspect arthritis when a child has constant joint pain or swelling, as well as skin rashes that can’t be explained and a fever along with swelling of lymph nodes or inflammation in the body’s organs. To be sure that it is juvenile arthritis, doctors depend on many things, which may include:
  • Physical exam
  • Symptoms
  • Family history
  • Lab tests
  • X rays.

Who Treats Juvenile Arthritis?

A team approach is the best way to treat juvenile arthritis. It is best if a doctor trained to treat these types of diseases in children (a pediatric rheumatologist) manages your child’s care. However, many children’s doctors and “adult” rheumatologists also treat children with arthritis.
Other members of your child’s health care team may include:
  • Physical therapist
  • Occupational therapist
  • Counselor or psychologist
  • Eye doctor
  • Dentist and orthodontist
  • Bone surgeon
  • Dietitian
  • Pharmacist
  • Social worker
  • Rheumatology nurse
  • School nurse.

How Is Juvenile Arthritis Treated?

Doctors who treat arthritis in children will try to make sure your child can remain physically active. They also try to make sure your child can stay involved in social activities and have an overall good quality of life. Doctors can prescribe treatments to reduce swelling, maintain joint movement, and relieve pain. They also try to prevent, identify, and treat problems that result from the arthritis. Most children with arthritis need a blend of treatments – some treatments include drugs, and others do not.

How Can You Help Your Child Live Well With Juvenile Arthritis?

Juvenile arthritis affects the whole family. It can strain your child’s ability to take part in social and after-school activities, and it can make schoolwork more difficult. Family members can help the child both physically and emotionally by doing the following:
  • Get the best care possible.
  • Learn as much as you can about your child’s disease and its treatment.
  • Insist that your child take the treatment.
  • Consider joining a support group.
  • Treat your child as normally as possible.
  • Encourage exercise and physical therapy for your child.
  • Work closely with your child’s school.
  • Talk with your child.
  • Work with therapists or social workers.

Do Children With Juvenile Arthritis Have to Limit Activities?

Pain sometimes limits what children with juvenile arthritis can do. However, exercise is key to reducing the symptoms of arthritis and maintaining function and range of motion of the joints. Ask your health care provider for exercise guidelines. Most children with arthritis can take part in physical activities and certain sports when their symptoms are under control. Swimming is a good activity because it uses many joints and muscles without putting weight on the joints.
During a disease flare, your child’s doctor may advise your child to limit certain activities. It will depend on the joints involved. Once the flare is over, your child can return to his or her normal activities.

What Are Researchers Trying to Learn About Juvenile Arthritis?

Scientists are looking for the possible causes of juvenile arthritis. They are studying genetic and environmental factors that they think are involved. They are also trying to improve current treatments and find new medicines that will work better with fewer side effects.

Money Harmony for Newlywed Couples and Engaged Couples

Young married life should be a joyful time, but conflict over money often interferes. For newlyweds under the age of 30, debt brought into the marriage is the number one cause of conflict. To avoid the unhappiness and divorce this conflict can cause, newly married and engaged couples should take steps to minimize money conflict and maximize money harmony in their relationships.

Crushing Financial Burdens -- A Pervasive Problem
American couples live in a financially stressful environment. At every turn they hear or see advertisements to purchase on credit. Tempting credit card offers with generous credit limits arrive in the mail almost daily. Over the last decade or so, household consumer debt has doubled, from $1 trillion to $2 trillion and bankruptcies have risen to record levels. Behind the statistics are millions of individual lives and marriages under enormous financial pressure.

Four Principles to Adjust Your Money Attitude
Couples have the best chance of getting their financial house in order if they first adjust their attitude. The researchers say four principles can transform your thinking toward a harmonious financial relationship with your spouse.

Principle One:  Value your spouse above money. Love and good will toward one another must infuse all efforts to unify your financial life. Remember that you are married to each other, not to your checkbooks. When each of you feels loved enough to be emotionally safe, then you can communicate openly, honestly, and compassionately about money matters.

Principle Two:  Be willing to grow. It's important that each of you discover your money personality and then be willing to adjust it so you can achieve harmony and meet your financial goals. Money personality refers to your attitudes and behavioral tendencies toward money. Financial problems are typically behavior problems connected with emotions, attitudes, and habits learned from our experience and family of origin.

Principle Three:  Share your vision. Explore together your core values and deepest desires for the kind of life you want for yourself and your children. How many children do you want? Do you want to invest time and money in music instruments and lessons, athletics, art, involvement in civic affairs? Do you want more time for family or more for professional achievement? As you explore each other's values, begin to develop a shared vision that unites you as a couple and directs your future financial plans. Envision money as a means to help you achieve your shared goals - and thus as a tool to enhance your marriage.

Principle Four:  Decide to live well, not high. Develop a non-materialistic attitude that values living well rather than living high. Living high is characterized by conspicuous consumption. Living well is characterized by altruism, service, work, self-reliance, and consecration. When we live well, we view our life and resources as stewardships.

Learn Financial Skills
Once you've adjusted your money attitudes, you're ready to build your financial skills. Three foundational skills are discussed here.

Live Within Your Means with a Values-Based Spending Plan
To develop a spending plan to live within your means, create a simple monthly budget that tracks all income and expenses for a month. Determine whether your monthly income less expenses is a positive number and do the same for your yearly budget. If expenses are greater than income, then together consider sacrifices you might make and creative options to reduce expenses or increase income. Remember that income must exceed outgo. Counsel with each other and with parents, ecclesiastical leaders, and university outreach financial counseling clinics until you have a clear plan that works. Periodically review your spending plan to see whether your budget moves you toward your most valued life goals.

    Earn Interest; Don't Pay Interest
Reducing debt reduces marital stress and increases financial harmony and strength. Therefore a debt elimination plan is an important part of every couple's quest for financial harmony.
The "fold-down" method may be the simplest and most powerful debt elimination strategy available. It works as follows:  Make payments on all your debts, and when one debt is fully paid, apply the payment you were making to the now-paid debt to another debt. This increase in payment will pay off the second debt more quickly. Continue the process until all debts are paid in full. This technique can eliminate debt in less than half the time it takes to pay off debt by making minimum payments.

Develop a debt-averse attitude and a deliberate desire to avoid paying interest. Only use a credit card if you pay off the total balance every month. Remember the folk proverb about paying interest and you will be motivated:  "Interest:  Those who understand it earn it. Those who do not, pay it."

    Save and Invest
It's important to save and invest. It's also important to have emergency savings. Therefore we recommend that you first establish an emergency fund equal to at least three months of your family expenses. Also make sure you have an emergency supply of non-perishable food, water, and other essentials.

Once your emergency savings and supplies are in place, invest 10%-20% of your monthly income in a 401K retirement plan or in a traditional or Roth Individual Retirement Account. Information about these plans is available on the Internet and at university financial counseling clinics.
Get Financially Educated

A good source of information is personal finance classes at local community colleges or from university outreach extension services. The Internet can also be a good source, including the following websites:
  • Money.com
  • Kiplinger.com
  • SmartMoney.com
  • Quicken.com
  • YahooFinance.com
  • MSNMoneyCentral.com

The book Till Debt Do Us Part by Bernard E. Poduska is another valuable resource.

Conclusion
Applying the principles of sound financial management is a critical life skill. Married couples who do this can work their way to money harmony and a stable financial future. Engaged couples who begin applying these principles now can have those same benefits and a smoother financial transition to marriage. Single individuals, too, will establish habits that will bring strength and peace to their lives.

How to Control Anger

Controlling Short-Term Anger

  1. 1
Take a break as soon as you recognize that you're angry. Stop what you're doing, get away from whatever is irritating you, and just take a breather. Getting away from whatever is upsetting you will make it infinitely easier to calm down. Try it out in these situations:
    • If you're experiencing road rage, pull over on a side road and turn off the car.
    • If you're angry at work, go to to a room or step outside for a moment. If you drive to work, consider sitting in your car so that you're in a space you own.
    • If you're upset at home, go to a single-occupancy space (such as the bathroom) or for a walk.
    • If you're experiencing anger in an unfamiliar place, don't just wander off by yourself. Tell whoever you're with that you need a short mental vacation, and ask that he or she stand a few extra paces away from you. Close your eyes and try to imagine yourself somewhere peaceful.
  2. 2
Breathe deeply. If your heart hammers with rage, slow it down by controlling your breathing. Count to three as you inhale, hold the breath in your lungs for three more seconds, and count to three again as you exhale. Focus only on the numbers as you do this, and refuse to think about whatever is angering you. Repeat as many times as necessary.
  3. 3
Go to a "happy place". If you're still having a difficult time calming down, imagine yourself in a scene you find incredibly relaxing. It could be your childhood backyard, a quiet forest, a solitary island - whatever locale makes you feel at home and peaceful. Focus on imagining every detail of this place: the light, the noises, the temperature, the weather, the smells. Keep dwelling on your happy place until you feel completely immersed in it, and hang out there for a few minutes or until you feel calm.
  4. 4
And still if it doesn't work, remember the best time you have spend, remember every happy situation possible if you can. It can be with your mother, friends, or your partner.Try to bring a smile on your face by remembering such incidents.
  5. 5
Practice positive self-talk. When you're ready, "discuss" the situation with yourself in positive and relieving terms. For example, if you experience road rage, you could try: "That guy almost sideswiped me, but maybe he was experiencing an emergency and I'll probably never have to see him again. I feel lucky that I'm alive and my car is unscratched. I'm fortunate that I can still drive. I can continue to be calm and focused when I get back on the road."
    • If you find a form of positive self-talk that really works for you, make it a mantra. Repeat it to yourself as many times as you need to in order to return to the right frame of mind.
  6. 6
Ask for the support of someone you trust. If you're still upset, sharing your concerns with a close friend or confidant might help.
    • Clearly express what you want from the other person. If you just want a sounding board, state at the beginning that you don't want help or advice, just sympathy. If you're looking for a solution, let the other person know.
    • Set a time limit. Give yourself a set amount of time to vent about what's upsetting you, and stick to it - when time is up, your rant is over. This will help you move on instead of dwelling on the situation endlessly.
  7. 7
Try to see some humor in what angered you. After you've calmed down and established that you're ready to get over the incident, try to see the lighter side. Casting the incident in a humorous light can help you maintain positivity and avoid getting angry over the same thing next time.

Controlling Long-Term Anger

  1. 1
Engage in physical activity. The endorphins that come from exercise can help you calm down, and moving your body provides a physical outlet for your rage. Try these activities you can practice alone:
    • Running.
    • Weight training.
    • Cycling.
    • Yoga.
    • Basketball.
    • Martial arts.
    • Swimming.
    • Netball
  2. 2
Restructure the way you think about your life. Cognitive habits are the hardest to break, but it can be done. Ask yourself honestly if you see everyone and everything as an adversary or an obstacle. Odds are, the world isn't exactly that way - but you think it is, whether it's due to paranoia or past experience. Try these tips on changing your worldview:
    • When you wake up in the morning, resolve that you're going to greet every person or experience as if it's brand-new to you. Shed your preconceived notions, and give everything a fresh start.
    • When you find yourself falling into the same thought ruts, say "Stop it" out loud. Consciously change your line of thinking to something else.
    • Try on different points of view. Instead of focusing exclusively on how you're affected by a situation, ask yourself how it affects the other people involved. Think about the obstacles they're dealing with, and how they're responding.
  3. 3
Keep a journal of what upsets you and how you plan to fix it. Every time you're overwhelmingly angry, write down exactly what happened. (It's important to be honest, even if it casts you in an unfavorable light - remember, a journal is meant to be private.) Then plan out what you're going to do to fix the problem and avoid running into it next time. If you do find yourself in the same upsetting situation, refer back to your journal notes to see what else you can do.
  4. 4
See a mental health professional. If your anger has progressed to the point that it's interfering with your day-to-day life or your ability to maintain positive relationships, see a doctor. He or she can assess the root of your problem and whether or not you require therapy, medication, or some combination of both.
    • Realize that depression, even that diagnosed by a professional, can at root be caused by anger, and the frustration arising when it cannot or is not rectified, and there is no justice. Because anger in most cases must be suppressed, so as to not cause harm to oneself and others, or its source has caused humiliation and shame, and because one seethes with it when not released, and one pushes it into the unconscious, its unresolved festering can cause depression.or animosity, when actually the true problem may be they are simply unaware of what one's standards are. Confront the perpetrator in some way to let them know that they are making one angry. Of course caution must be considered in the event of the possibility of violence.
